What
is La Más Bella?

La
Más Bella (the translation could be something like
“The Most Beautiful”) is an experimental art magazine,
published in Madrid, Spain, since 1993. The publishers of
La Más Bella are Diego Ortiz and Pepe Murciego, two
persons involved in the world of arts and media in Madrid
for more than fifteen years.
La
Más Bella is conceived by the publishers as a personal
artistic work, so La Más Bella is not a commercial
or professional magazine. Our goal is to publish artistic
works made by hundreds of contributors: visual artists, writers,
photographers, performance-artists, experimental musicians
and/or poets and/or videomakers, etc. All these artists come
from many disciplines and styles, but most of them use to
work in the more experimental and risky side of the contemporary
creation.
Every new edition of La Más Bella is a project completely
different from the previous one, both in contents and in its
external appearance:
Monographic contents:
La Más Bella is a monographic magazine. The publishers
choose a subject, normally ambiguous and/or conceptual and/or
funny, and we invite to participate to dozens of artists,
asking them a contribution related to the subject we suggest.
From the first edition of La Más Bella in 1993, more
than 600 artists from all over Spain have collaborated in
the magazine.
Different formats:
Formally La Más Bella change totally its external
appearance every new edition. The publishers really love
to experiment with unusual containers, always surprising
and funny.
The best way to understand what is the philosophy of La Más
Bella is having a look to a couple of examples:
|
La
Más Bella TU (The Most Beautiful YOU)
Published in 2003, its monographic subject was the concept
of “identity”. Formally the magazine
was a typical wallet full of its typical contents (bank
notes, ID cards, ID photographs, tickets…) recreated
by different artists (almost one hundred).

La Más Bella Juegos Reunidos (The Most Beautiful
United Games)
Published in 2005, the subject of the edition was "the

in which every content (a collection of cards, game boards,
etc) was made by an artist (55 contributors).

La
Más Bella Grandes Exitos (2006) (The Most Beatiful

La
Más Bella Manual de Instrucciones (The Most Beautifull

theme is the concept of “utility”.

We
make one -sometimes a couple- of new La Más Bella's per
year, with an edition of 1.000 copies. The magazine is sold
in specialized art bookstores, museum shops and art galleries
along many spanish cities. It is also common to find La Más
Bella in art fairs as ARCO (international art fair celebrating
in Madrid), artistic meetings and events where the publishers
use to go to promote the magazine and sell it directly to the
people.

La
Más Bella develops other projects also related
with the world of independent and experimental art and
edition, as the proyect BELLAMÁTIC.
 |
What
is Bellamátic?
BELLAMÁTIC is a vending machine, similar
to those that sell snacks or drinks in many streets,
stations or public spaces.
BELLAMATIC has been specially designed to automatically
sells magazines, catalogues, CDs, books, videos…
all kind of editions produced by La Mas Bella or
by any other artist, contributor, alternative publisher,
independent art gallery, etc.
But BELLAMATIC is not only a vending machine, BELLAMATIC
is also an artistic object in itself. Many artists
and contributors develop performances, installations,
exhibitions, etc, using BELLAMATIC as a subject,
excuse, support…
Up until the present Bellamátic has been installed
in more than fourty places all over Spain (click here
to know the complete tour, photos, etc.). As La Más
Bella magazine, Bellamátic
is not a commercial project (actually we have only
one machine). Bellamátic is conceived as an
artistic project, that allows us to promote La Más
Bella and many other independent editions and artists,
in a very funny and surprising way.
